OAXACAN TEACHERS  AND ANY OTHER ONES ARE WELCOME HERE!

Dear Oaxacan TEFL teachers!

I have opened this wiki with the goal of improving our teaching. We work in one of the poorest states of Mexico and very often there are not enough resources available to offer our students a more atractive class . I'm a teacher at a junior high school in the capital of the state, and so I  am fortunate to have easy access to the resources offered by the web. I want this wiki to be a first step to share those resources and to make them available to all our colleagues. We all, as teachers, have a commmitment: make better human beings of all the boys and girls in our classes. It is a real serious and demanding challenge. It implies giving all our soul to this noble task. And by sharing, we all together can make this work easier. So, dear teacher, feel free to add your knowledge, to write your comments and doubts, to ask and give advice. We all are in the same road. Let's share our great work and make it fruitful!

If you are worried about your teaching, or if you would like to see what bright teachers do in their classrooms, then you have to go to the page called GREAT TEACHING VIDEOS AND INSPIRING SITES ( Just click on this link!) . There you will find  a short selection of some of the most interesting pages for teacher development and training.  Please feel free to edit that page and add your own sites for this purpose. We all can improve through this sharing! And if you want to start immediatly, go to the folder TOOLS, and choose one of the pages to explore.

A wiki is a powerful tool to use when you want to interact with your students. It is very easy to start. First you have to go to he home page http://www.pbworks.com, register as a new user and then you can start. A wiki is generally used for a specific goal. Let's suppose you want your students describe themselves. So this is the goal. You must post in the front page the goal of your wiki, what it is for. Then you must teach the students how to use it. Depending on your students' ages, you must add maybe a paragraph or a section to parents notifying them how you will expect their kids to use the wiki and how they can also look at their kids' work here. Then you must add some sections about wiki ettiquette, what to do and what not to do. And about wiki ways to add files or to interact. Always a good example is appreciated! Then you should think about opening new pages to each one of your students and giving access to them and under which conditions: writers. And then maybe add a rubric and a guide for the activity. You can use the side bars for that purpose. Here you can also post some links to internet pages with tools for making slides or presentations so the kids can start using those tools! This is another sidegoal from the main one! This is a link to Salón de Álvaro, a wiki I'm still doing with my students. Just click and comment please.

Here I post a great video from Common Craft about how to make wikis in plain English, enjoy!

And if you are wondering what's the difference between a blog and a wiki, watch this:

It is always a good idea to a add a page called Sandbox where the students can add all kind of files and in this way experiment. I've opened a Sandbox page, so enjoy!
